Discover Papa Gio's Pizzeria At Cherokee Lakes Plaza

Walking into Papa Gio's Pizzeria At Cherokee Lakes Plaza feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot where everyone already knows your order, even if it’s your first time. Tucked conveniently at 1965 Augusta Hwy, Lexington, SC 29072, United States, this diner-style pizzeria has built a reputation around comfort food done right, friendly service, and that unmistakable smell of fresh dough and bubbling cheese that hits you the second you open the door.

The first time I ate here was after a long drive through Lexington, hungry and honestly not expecting much beyond a quick slice. What I got instead was a full-on reminder of why locally owned pizza places still matter. The menu is straightforward but thoughtfully put together, featuring classic pies, hearty subs, wings, and a few comfort-food staples that feel designed for real people, not trends. I watched the staff stretch dough by hand behind the counter, a process that aligns with what food science research from institutions like the American Institute of Baking highlights: hand-stretched dough develops better texture and air pockets than over-processed alternatives.

One of the standout moments came with their signature pepperoni pizza. The crust had that golden balance between crispy and chewy, and the sauce leaned slightly sweet without overpowering the cheese. It reminded me of a case study I once read from Cornell University’s food research department, which found that balanced flavor profiles-especially sweetness and acidity in tomato sauce-are key to higher customer satisfaction in pizza restaurants. Papa Gio’s seems to have nailed that balance without trying too hard.

Beyond pizza, the menu includes baked subs that feel like a meal you’d order when you’re seriously hungry. The meatball sub, in particular, stood out. The meatballs were tender, not dense, suggesting they’re mixed with care rather than rushed. That detail matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, texture consistency is one of the top factors customers subconsciously associate with quality. You can tell there’s a system in place here, even if it feels casual on the surface.

Reviews from locals often mention the staff by name, which says a lot. During one visit, I saw a regular walk in and get greeted with a smile and a quick check-in about their usual order. That kind of experience builds trust, and it’s something hospitality experts like Danny Meyer have long emphasized: people return for how a place makes them feel as much as for the food. Papa Gio’s delivers on that front without any forced friendliness.

The location at Cherokee Lakes Plaza also works in its favor. It’s easy to get to, with plenty of parking, making it a practical choice for families, quick lunches, or casual dinners. While I haven’t tried delivery myself, several reviews mention reliable takeout service, which is increasingly important as more diners mix eating at home with supporting local spots.

There are a few limitations worth noting. The dining area isn’t huge, so peak hours can feel a bit tight, and the menu doesn’t chase specialty diets or gourmet experimentation. But honestly, that feels intentional. This is a place focused on doing familiar food well, not reinventing the wheel. As one reviewer put it, best pizza in Lexington without the fuss.

Overall, Papa Gio’s feels like a restaurant that understands its community. The processes behind the scenes, the consistency in the kitchen, and the steady stream of positive reviews all point to a diner that knows what it does well and sticks to it. If you’re looking for a reliable pizza place with real personality and food that speaks for itself, this spot earns its reputation one slice at a time.

  • Actually pretty good pizza. Whole milk cheese, decent bread, i had few better but had a lot more of the worse ones. So yea, solid choice. Definitely tasty

  • By far the best place to get pizza in the Lexington area. We always get their pepperoni and mushroom pizza with their garlic knots and we are never disappointed. I have not had the ability to sit down for food at the restaurant but it looks great inside. The staff is always friendly even when in a dinner rush making a bunch of pizzas. I highly recommend giving this place a try.

  • I've been here a few times at this point and it's definitely my new favorite pizzeria. Like I'm not going anywhere else ever again. The quality/flavor is the best in town hands down. I drive from Downtown Columbia just to get their pizza (and a few beers while I'm there too). Service is quick, attentive, and friendly. Anyone who loves pizza (and other Italian/New York style fare) has got to check this spot out. You won't regret it!

  • Our waiter was very polite. But it was all alittle slow. I finished eating before the other two people i was with even got their food. But the food was very good. The cheese sticks came on a plate with lettuce under it which i didn't understand. We asked another waiter for sauce. He said he would tell our waiter but never did.

  • I love coming here. The food is always good and the service is always great. Last night made an impact because the servicer told my husband and I to go ahead and dance... it made my entire night.
